Nothing makes me feel dumber than Far Side Friday

How so? Just the “I never would have thought of that” angle?

Yeah it just takes me longer than it should to “ get it”

Having read and “gotten” most of them already (and I do mean most) probably gives me some advantage in picking ones that are funny, but they’re not all funny immediately in the same ways to everybody and can take longer to get , which is a handicap.

FRIDAY!!! This is another no-travel Friday for me. Travel starts up again on Sunday. I have another flying weekend planned, so next Friday will also be a no-travel Friday. I’m getting spoiled!

Although Gary Larson graduated with a degree in communications, he has a passion for the sciences. A solid understanding of a variety of sciences helps decipher his cartoons.

My favorites were always the entomology-related ones. I spent as summer at a research station st udying entomology when I was in high school.

My favorite entomology one is still probably the one with the one entomologist explaining to the cops that his murdered (and pinned) colleague has a note with the info of where and when he was collected.

Does this mean he’s having a bout of murderer’s ego? Is he just showing the cops (like in any procedural) the little quirk of a specialization that will crack the case - by saying directly who did it ? Is he just noticing that the murderer was another obsessive compulsive entomologist? I don’t know, but it’s funny.

Oh my. I’ve been seen chasing insects with a net. If you want a real challenge, try to catch a dragonfly with a net. Ain’t easy.

As part of the course, we were required to put together a collection. My favorite specimen was a black-winged damselfly (aka ebony jewelwing).

I caught it just downstream from a spring where the creek was fully enclosed by trees. They were flying around everywhere. It was like a scene out of a fairy tale.

One of the strangest moments in my life was one morning when I overslept. We were staying in a big bunkhouse. I awoke because I was being shaken by o ne of the grad students who had a snake hook hooked over my hip. When I opened my eyes I saw the professor standing over me, pith helmet on his head, dark shades over his eyes, cargo shorts and button-down shirt, and two collection bags draped over his shoulders. In other words, dressed exactly like the stereotypical scientist as portrayed in the Far Side.

He told me I had five minutes before the truck left for our morning field trips. I have yet to beat that record for getting dressed and out the door.
